There were men up on top, running about, attracted by the noise. Now one of them, leaning over the side, saw their lantern. He pointed toward them, and called, his accent thick, and barely understandable. "There... There." The cry was carried along behind the battlements, as more, and more heads looked over. A short arrow struck the ground nearby, then another, and another.

"Put the light out. Put the light out." Shouted Steve shocked out of his amazement.

"What the hell's going on?" gasped Alex as he quickly turned down the wick, and the flame died.

Without the light to point the direction, the archers above lost their target, and fired wildly about where they stood.

"We can't stay here," whispered Steve anxiously, trying to keep his voice steady in spite of his rapid shallow breathing.

They had no idea where they were, or where they were going, they just ran.

Barbara and Sandy had worn high heel shoes, but running in the dark was impossible with them; even though the boys were helping them; reluctantly the girls threw their shoes away. Cut and sore feet were a better choice than damaged flesh and broken bone.

They were now amongst trees. They could see the vague shapes of rough trunks, but in the poor light could not see the saplings, and constantly they ran into these. Their exposed skin soon became covered in a mass of welts, and open bleeding wounds. It was only when thankfully, the undergrowth became physically too thick and tangled to keep on, that they stopped.

Gasping for breath, leaning against a tree, or falling to the ground, they tried to make sense of what was happening. Barbara was sobbing uncontrollably. They were all very frightened, and totally confused.

"I don't understand... what’s happening?" No one could answer Sara.

It was Steve who fought his mind back out of panic, to thoughts of what they should do next. "There's got to be an explanation. All we have to do is think logically.... Find out where we are.... Find someone back in the village who can help us..."

"In the village." Alex sounded angry. "What makes you think there is a village...? I mean... the hell, where are we?"

"Were where we always have been," replied Steve. "Think about it; we ran uphill from Murray Mann... from whatever that place was; then into these trees. This has to be manor wood. Then the village is over that way," he pointed vaguely as he jogged in the direction he had pointed.

One by one, the others followed in the darkness. Only a short distance away the trees thinned out, and gave way to pasture land. From here they could see back in the direction they thought they had come. A little further to the left they could just make out the dim silhouette of the castle. Lights flickered about the top of the walls. Below, and a little closer to them, were other lights. Bonfires were burning, lighting a cluster of small structures.

"Where's the village then?" said Alex tauntingly.

Steve’s words were slow and disbelieving.
